Statement

My work is about movement and the body; I have studied for many years with Gong Yi Wang, an important Chinese artist who has become my dear friend. With Gong Yi I learned Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. I have always tried to express joy and pleasure in the making of my work and the Chinese brush helped me connect my heart and my hand in a special way. Dancing and motion are present in my work through the rhythm of the lines and marks that make up figures I draw.

I feel an affinity for Expressionism and Impressionism and the materials I use are diverse; including oil on canvas, metal and wood, silkscreen printing, and computer generated drawing, and most significant, the Chinese brush, ink and papers, materials developed several thousand years ago and are unchanged.

My greatest influences are Wang Duo a Chinese calligraphy artist of the Quing Dynasty who lived from 1592 to 1652 and Willem DeKooning who was born in Holland in 1904 and died in the United States in 1997.
